We learnt about syllables and that they are beats in a word. For example, then name Laidlaw has two syllables in it (Laid-law), and so does Northcote (North-cote). The word experiment has four (ex-pe-ri-ment), and class only has one.

We then wrote some haiku poems, because they're nice short poems (three lines long) that only require you to get the correct amount of syllables on the lines. No rhyming! The first line has to have five syllables, the second must have seven, and the last line has five again. This makes a pattern 5 - 7 - 5.

These are our haiku poems about Stratus, our cockatiel.
